Highlands Health System held their annual Senior Expo at the Ramada Inn in Paintsville. The event was attended by approximately 200 senior citizens, with 20 community partners displaying exhibits and providing information to attendees. May is Elder Abuse Awareness month and a variety of topics were covered regarding the safety and wellness of seniors.
The event began with a warm welcome from Melissa Vance, Director of Community Development, and Maxanna Cook, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, at Highlands Health System. Following the welcome, Highlands Regional Medical Centers Board of Trustees Chairman, Ted Nairn, discussed the progress that Highlands has made over the years and introduced the 40 year anniversary video, a short film developed to celebrate Highlands 40 years of service to the region.
Next Teresa Green, Director of Infection Control, Interim Director of the Emergency Department, and Chest Pain Coordinator at Highlands Regional Medical Center provided a brief presentation on the early signs and systems of a heart attack and why it is important to go to the nearest ER as soon as you feel chest pain.
Teresa was followed by Tim Clark, Deputy from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, who presented pertinent information on personal protection and safeguarding your property. He also discussed local scams, and ways to protect your identity and personal information.
After a short break and lunch, Lance Daniels, attorney from the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund, gave a presentation on living wills and power of attorneys. He explained the difference between the two and there importance when making critical, time sensitive decisions.
“We appreciate the opportunity to meet with so many area seniors,” Highlands Director of Community Development Melissa Vance said. “It was an event which brought many vendors and community partners together as we address the healthcare needs of our seniors throughout the Big Sandy region.”
